Sony Alpha 7R VI: high resolution meets speed
With the Alpha 7R VI (ILCE-7RM6), Sony launches the sixth generation of its high-resolution flagship line – for the first time featuring a fully stacked sensor, 30 frames per second, and 8K video. The official announcement took place on May 13, 2026, with market availability starting in June at a price of 5,099 euros or 4,499 US dollars for the body.
Sensor and processor
At its core is a newly developed, back-illuminated, fully stacked Exmor RS full-frame sensor measuring 35.9 x 24 millimeters, delivering 66.8 effective megapixels at a maximum resolution of 9984 x 6656 pixels. Readout time drops from roughly 100 milliseconds on the Alpha 7R V to about 14 milliseconds – making the electronic shutter genuinely usable for moving subjects in the R series for the first time. Processing is handled by the BIONZ XR2, which combines image processing and the AI unit on a single chip. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 32,000 and can be expanded to ISO 50–102,400. Sony claims a dynamic range of up to 16 stops for stills; independent measurements put real-world video performance at around 14 stops.
Speed and autofocus
Burst speed triples to 10 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 30 frames per second with the electronic shutter – blackout-free and at full 14-bit depth in lossless RAW. Inherited from the Alpha 1 II are Pre-Capture with up to one second of lead time and the Speed Boost function; autofocus and exposure are calculated up to 60 times per second. Real-time Recognition AF+ works with 759 phase-detection points covering roughly 94 percent of the frame and recognizes people, animals, birds, insects, vehicles, and aircraft – optionally in a fully automatic mode. The low-light limit is EV -6. For tripod work, the pixel-shift mode produces composite files of up to around 266 megapixels from 4 or 16 individual frames.
Video without compromise for the first time
The R series goes hybrid: 8K at 30p is created via 8.2K oversampling with a crop of roughly 1.2x, while 4K at 120p uses 5K oversampling in 10-bit 4:2:2. A sensor-level dual-gain system improves noise performance but is limited to 4K up to 30p and low ISO values. Graphite cooling is said to enable 8K recording of up to 120 minutes at 25 degrees Celsius. 32-bit float audio requires the XLR-A4 adapter.
Body and features
The magnesium body measures 132.7 x 96.9 x 82.9 millimeters and weighs 713 grams. The Quad XGA OLED viewfinder resolves 9.44 million dots, is around three times brighter than its predecessor according to Sony, and supports 10-bit HDR. The rear display measures 3.2 inches, resolves 2.1 million dots, and tilts via a four-axis mechanism. The in-body stabilizer compensates up to 8.5 stops in the center and 7.0 stops at the edges. Two card slots accept CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD, complemented by two USB-C ports (10 Gbit/s plus USB 2.0 with Power Delivery), Wi-Fi 6E, C2PA authenticity certificates, and illuminated buttons. The new NP-SA100 battery is not compatible with the previous NP-FZ100 and delivers 600 shots via the viewfinder or 710 via the display under CIPA standards.
Price and positioning
The Alpha 7R VI has been on sale since June 2026 and, at 5,099 euros, sits roughly 2,000 US dollars below the Alpha 1 II. Anyone seeking maximum resolution combined with genuine burst capability gets the most versatile R model to date. Compared with the top model, compromises remain in the AF calculation rate and certain controls; purist landscape photographers without speed requirements will still find an alternative in the more affordable Alpha 7R V. For studio, architecture, landscape, and demanding hybrid productions, however, the Alpha 7R VI makes a clear statement.
